Gearbox or Transfer Box ?

Forum:

Help, just got the F70 on the road at the weekend done about 30 miles nasty noise from gearbox followed by a bang.
Still got all gears plus ok in 4 wheel but just an awful noise from the box, is there anyway to actually pin down if the fault is with either the gearbox or transfer box.
The levels are ok still, nothing nasty sticking out of the box just a noise that would crucify you. Looking to obtain a replacement box but would I need both.
Answers on a postcard would be appreciated.
Cheers to all.

Gearbox/Transfer box

Hi Bear

Get the back of the car up onto axle stands and chock the front wheels and let it tickover in gear so the wheels are spinning. You should be able to identify which unit the noise is coming from. If you still can't tell then you need to get a length of metal tube ( 15mm copper pipe is ideal ), it needs to be long enough to rest against the gearbox or transfer box casing with the other end held to your ear. Any knocking will be transmitted through the casing and echo down the pipe ( Check both units even if you hear a noise from the first one as the knock will transmit slightly from one unit to the other but will be louder on the one with the problem).

Alternatively, drop the oil out of both units into seperate clean containers and check if your have any teeth hanging off the magnetic drain plugs or trying to block up the drain hole. Then check the colour of the oil, if there is any metal thrashing around in the box the oil will have a silvery metallic sheen.

Hope this helps and please don't run yourself over when you've got it jacked up with the wheels turning. Oh yeah, don't forget to put some clean oil back in before you drive it anywhere.

Well put the vehicle up on the ramp, set the wheel free, started the engine engaged 2nd gear and within seconds an almighty shudder and everything seized up solid. Never got near it with the bar to listen which one might be causing the noise.
Removed rear propshaft and was able to turn joint slightly by hand to be met with a solid clunking noise which after deliberation decided it was coming from the transfer box. On removing the end cover on the tranfer box found the large bearing had completely disintergrated (are bearings meant to be round)? these ones wern't. They were squashed and jammed in. Have removed most of the damaged bearings in order to be able move the shaft slightly.
Can you purchase this bearing on its own or will it be a new transfer box. Also which side of the casing does the bearing push out from, in other words can it be done in position. I realise I will have to unbolt the transfer box to remove any debris on the other side but just curious to know if it can be done.
Cheers

OUCH !

I really feel for you, man.

Getting the beast on the road again and after only 30 miles it commits really nasty hari-kari !

So as us bods out there know to look out for this before it happens, could you tell us how many miles the vehicle has done Unknw Ta.

I'll tell you for why ..... years ago I used to run a Norton Commando. The layshaft bearing in these was known for making a swift exit out of the side of the gearbox at about 30000 miles (yes we brit bike riders put up with a huge amount of crap in those days ! ). Having had a couple of friends for whom this had happened, I replaced my bearing with a roller race before the nasty crunch was due.

rf man,
Its a 1991, 1 owner with full service history and only 67000 miles and bought from a friend who is as gutted as me this has happened. It had been standing for the last 18 months but I drained and replaced all levels prior to putting it on the road for my son last weekend. There was no noise there when I got it about a month ago, like I said took for a shake down only did 30 miles and shook the transfer box to bits never at any time did I get to use 4 wheel drive. Luckily stayed local to home.
The problem now if I can't do something with the box is trying to locate another at a sensible price I can't believe the price of the things £350-£450. Deciding whether now to break the vehicle. Most expensive 30 miles I've ever done.
Regards,
Bear

Dismantled transfer box smashed to pieces, great!
After seeing whats inside even more confused by the cost of a replacement. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask!
Can anyone confirm for me how many types of boxes are available ie different models. Obviously the petrol models will be different are the diesel non turbo different to the turbo.
Trying to source one and might be ok for monday but the man has to confirm its the correct one, he tells me there is a choice of four ie petrol, diesel(non), diesel (turbo), swb or lwb.
Mine is a 2.8 non diesel F70 DL SWB. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Regards Bear

The only differences are whet

The only differences are whether is petrol, or diesel. Then, if its diesel, does it have push button 4H, or 2H-4H-N-4L on the lever.

Cheers

David,
Mine has 2H-4H-N-4L on the lever, just been offered another one thats got the push button 4H I take it this will not fit.
regards, Bear

You can fit 2h-4h-n-4l into a push button 4h .... BUT ....

... not the other way around.

... well unless you are prepared to do all the wiring mods to a non-push-button 4h vehicle to make it look like a vehicle for which the 'electric' box was originally fitted. You will also need to tap off the brake vacuum to actuate the box. In all, I think it's just too much hassle.

If you're going the other way, I should think that the only thing you have to do is to block off the vacuum feed to the gearbox and leave the electric feeds to the solenoid vacuum switches disconnected.

Having lived with both types of transfer box, IMHO the 'electric/vacuum servo' box is a monumental waste of time, complexity and unreliability just to allow some poser to select 4wd by pressing a dinky little button.

OK I give in, the man rung me today and guess what its the wrong type of transfer box.
Can anybody give a contact for either a second hand or reconditioned transfer box.
Many thanks,
Bear

might be worth looking in yel

might be worth looking in yellow pages, (or exchange and mart?), for gearbox reconditioners. try looking on ebay for a scrapper they do come up occasionally.

Gearbox/Transfer Box

Transfer box arrived as promised, appeared in good condition.
Took me about 2hrs to put new one in. Checked all levels and tried it up the road. Everything sweet in all gears and drives. Back on the road no problems since.
Again I would just like to say great service from usedvanparts.co.uk
and reasonable prices.
Bear

Bear, AFAIK, it will physical

Bear, AFAIK, it will physically fit, but as mentioned elsewhere, the 4H selection has to be worked out, and I cant help you with this.
