hi david,no matey,there

hi david,

no matey,
theres no glovebox light fitted to mine,

its a rocker type switch located on the panel
behind the glovebox & above it under the dash = if this makes any sense,

when the glovebox is opened,
i can see the rear panel/firewall between engine and interior,
and in the gap between the top edge of the glovebox
and this firewall,
theres where the switch is located,

i may need to take a photo of it to explain better,
theres something printed on it,
but this is worn and i cannot make out what it is

just wondered if it was somerthing factory fitted,
or if it was sometype of thrown together thing by a previous owner,

Ok being in a secretive posit

Ok being in a secretive position like that, I would guess its some sort of home made anti theft ignition disableing device. Try switching it, and starting the vehicle.

Cheers
David

usually on a diesel the easye

usually on a diesel the easyest diy imobiliser is to put a switch in the feed to the fuel cut off solenoid on the injection pump. the solenoid is normally powered from the ignition switch so opens the fuel line on switch on and cuts it on switch off. so cutting the wire near the solenoid on the pump and wiring in a switch to break the feed is simple. the only thing is if memory serves me right there are two wires going to bits on the pump on my 89 td and i dont know which is the fuel solenoid or what the other wire is supposed to go to. i had a similar switch on a bedford midi van, as u are actually interupting the fuel supply using the stop solenoid u dont need to bleed the fuel system to get it to go again.

switch

Like to know more about this idea of a concealed switch for shutting of the fuel supply. As I usualy wrap a chain and padlock round the pedals and steering wheel for my anti theft precautions, may be a simple on/off tap in the fuel line, would do the job, though it would be a pain to have to open the bonnet each time you used it, any thought's/suggestions.

Anti theft.

Probably a diy anti-theft device. Pre immobilisation/zapper technology. Switch it 'on' and start the engine. Petrol engines cut the LT to the coil so the engine will not start. Diesel engines cut the diesel supply to the fuel-filter so your might discover the engine fires but then dies when the fuel in the filter empties. Might take 5 minutes before the engine starves of fuel.[Means the thief can steal your vehicle but is then forced to abandon the vehicle after a few miles]
NB.... when the fuel filter is empty you might need to 'prime' the filter before the engine will fire [and dont forget the switch!]
