Manual locking hub not working

Forum:

Hi all
I've just bought a 1986 2L Fourtrak because it seemed like a good idea at the time. Biggrin I've read all the threads about working out whether your transfer box/diff/hubs are not working and after plenty of jacking up (the Fourtrak), turning of driveshafts, propeller shafts, wheels etc., and removing the diff cover plate and watching all the cogs going round or not as the case may be, I've worked out that my off side manual locking hub is not doing what it says on the tin.}:) The twisty knob in the middle turns smoothly from LOCK to FREE and back again, and there are no nasty noises when I spin the wheel round. Is it likely that the free wheel hub clutch/ follower and springs are just seized up and need some TLC or will I need a complete new locking hub assembly? I have not been able to undo the 5 spline drive bolts that hold the cover and twisty knob on to the free wheel hub body so am wondering if its worth the effort of trying to get it off or not. Any ideas, advice or clues welcome .
Thanks

Sounds to me like either the FWH is brocken inside. Which means you will need to get it appart. Or the half shaft/universal joint has snaped. Which means you will need to get the FWH appart to relese the cerclip holding the stub axle into the hub asembly.
Basicly you need to get that FWH appart in order to find out just what the problem is.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

sounds like........

Thanks Nev,
there are no unpleasant noises from anywhere so I hope the HS/UJ is OK. I'll just have to try harder on the bolts.
