'93 Sportrack Headlight problem - full beam but no dip!!

Forum:

I've just got myself a 93 Sportrack - very clean and very pleased with it.

However, small problem with the headlights. I've got full beam but no dip. However, when I have a fiddle (i.e. take the blub out and reconnect the 3-pin plug) the dip works but only after I give it a shake!!!). Before I fiddled the RHS dip didn't work but the LHS did - post fiddle I haven't got any dipped lights (DOH!)

Is this due to carbon build up on the plug, or are my bulbs faulty or could it be due to the non-standard radio that was fitted?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

Bulbs then cable

If you have a 12v tester then test the 3pin connector. Test between a pin and battery earth - switch on dip, switch on full beam. You should get power from 2of3 connections. The 3rd pin [probably the centre pin] will be earth. If you have power the fault lies in the bulb.
Next change both bulbs. Check both are the correct watt and are full-beam/dip-beam bulbs. Its easy to get the wrong sort or wrong watt of bulb.
It that does not fix the problem take a close look at the 3pin connectors - probably in need of re-soldering to achieve a decent connection.
From there you will need to with a 12v meter along the cables until you find the fault - possibly a break or corroded connector.

The radio should have no association associated with the headlamps. So radio = no effect.

Try the simple things first.

Try the simple things first. Remove the plastic covers from around the switch mechanism on the steering column, then spray something like WD40, CRC, onto all the switch contacts. They could just be dirty.

thanks to both of you - all sorted. It was the blubs - although both looked ok once I had FINALLY managed to take off the three pinned plug. I took the opportunity to also give them a clean to make sure they are in good working condition.
