Sporty lift requirements?

Forum:

Hi all, I'd like to get some lift on my 94 Sportrak, anyone know whats required?

I know that I'll need some shackles but other than that I'm a little uneducated, here are my questions:

* Can anyone confirm if fourtrak shackles are compatible?
* Will I need some new shocks?
* Will I need to modify any other part of the vehicle?
* Is there anything else I need to know? (ie. will I have to remove the sway bar? is the Sportrak far more likely to roll when cornering etc?)

lifty lofty

Sportrak swaybar removeal

Having read what the Aussies do to Sportraks I went out and removed the swaybar from my '97 and have never regreted it.The drive is so similar compared to before removal that you will wonder why they bothered to fit one in the first place.Best of luck with your other mods, don't forget to send in some pics.

Lifted

Depends upon the height of the lift, for a small lift not much is necessary, +1"; larger lifts will require a dropped steering arm longer flexible brake pipes, extended steering column, longer shocks, extended sway bar, plus modifications to ancilliary items such as wiring.
Sway bars/anti roll are a contentious issue, many people remove them without realising the implications; removal affects the vehicle in numerous ways.
Handling suffers, mainly cornering and emergency situations such as emergency stops; vehicle designers bias the systems towards road use, and therefore design the system to operate within these parameters. Removal of the sway bar also increases stopping distances, with this in mind, insurers will not pay out if you are involved in an accident as they deem the vehicle unsafe, and not conforming to its designed requirements.

My suggestion would be simple, lift your vehicle by +1", fit larger wheels and tyres; and source or manufacture a detachable sway bar, this can be removed for off road usage, and refitted for road use. This would be an ideal compromise and ensure you are legal.

not much needed

Just wedge some 235 75 15 colway MT's on it, remove the front mud flap support and cut your front mud flaps in half, I just got back from doing some lanes in Derbyshire and it did everything I wanted it to, Inc pindale + stanage edge.

Best price I could get for a set of 4 tyres was formula4 in Stafford less than £200 fitted.

A little height would be nice, but not necesery, was planing a 2" suspension lift and 2" body lift but after seeing what these trucks can do and reading assasins post I may just do a 1" suspension lift.

A removable sway bar.... is a good idea, I shall look into it.
