Buying & modifying a YRV Turbo

Forum:

Hi, im looking for a YRV Turbo at the moment but i know 130bhp isn't goin to last me long as my current cars an impreza sti. But im having trouble finding any decent info on the net!

How much boost to the turbo's run at standard & when does the boost cut kick in? How much power can the auto box take & the engine internals for that matter?

Thanks a lot for any help

Jonny

My car runs at 1 Bar boost

My car runs at 1 Bar boost accordnig to guage i fitted, it kicks in just under 1000rpm .Change the standard exhaust to blitz nur makes big difference, i changed filter to Blitz sus but not any noticable gain

thanks for reply

1 bar? is that standard? seems pretty high & kicks in really early aswell! I wonder how much boost the little turbo can take?

yeah it's standard. The wee

yeah it's standard. The wee man sure rockets, just touch the pedal and your off. Easy leave scooby standing well for first 2-300 meters Smile Just such a fun car to drive, watch the cornering though you need to get lowered springs, like driving a double decker otherwise

Hi and welcome Jonny, I'm in

Hi and welcome Jonny,

I'm in the same boat as you. I too currently own a Scooby STI. And now also own a YRV Turbo.

The only thing I have done on my YRV is the following:

Blitz SUS air filter

Although it might be physicological, I thnk it makes a difference.

Although things I'm looking in doing after reading on this forum:

Eibach lowered suspension, Blitz Exhaust and wider tyres. The latter in my opinion is definately needed, as the YRV handling in standard guise can be a bit frightening at speed on the standard 175 tyres.

As for the faster take off. Yes it is quick, especially using the Steer shift function. 2nd gear will give you over 70MPH!
As you will be aware the STI in the scooby is a bigger turbo, and the lag on the scooby is very noticiable. Where as the YRV with a smaller turbo is quicker at spool up.

Jon.

Hi mate, Im interested in

Hi mate,

Im interested in the YRV because im after something cheap to run but still nippy & a bit of a q car. I cant imagine it being anywhere near as fast as the impreza to be honest.I guess i neeed to find one to test drive.

Does any one know how much boost it can take standard, how much power the gearbox will take & is there anywhere in the uk to get them re-mapped?

cheers

Cheap run-a-bout

Hi Johnny,

There not a bad run-a-bout, but at the moment I have had niggling issues with mine (as Daihatsu Dave can testify to). One of them being the fuel economy. At the moment I fill up using Shell V-Max (Same as the scoob). But noticed the MPG on my YRV to be pretty horrific at the moment. And that was even before swapping the air-filter. To give you some idea. I filled up with around £27 from close to quarter of a tank left. Been driving around for the last week, to and from work, as well as the odd blat down the motorway and dual-carriage ways. And at the moment the fuel needle is poitning at between 1/2 and 1/4 of a tank. The odometer has registered just over 140miles! And I cannot see any fuel leaks. Sad

As for extra power from the exisiting stock bits and pieces. Unfortunately I don't have that information. Someone on here should be able to give you a bit more info on that. But I do know that someone has mofidifed a Toyota Starlett 1.3 Turbo, with a bigger turbo etc.. And expects to get 240BHP! Shok
So I wouldn't be surprised you couldn't do something similar witht the YRV.

I keep hearing about this

I keep hearing about this Daihatsu Dave guy? so i tried pming him but it wont work. Iv got loads of questions about the car but unlike the scoob where theres info all over the place i can hardly find anything on the YRV! lol

YRV

Hi there guys,
i'm no YRV guru, still learning every day. The Charade GTti is more my speciality, should be after 15+ years of owning one.
My email addy is eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%64%61%76%65%76%61%6e%64%61%6d%6d%40%74%69%73%63%61%6c%69%2e%63%6f%2e%75%6b%22%3e%64%61%76%65%76%61%6e%64%61%6d%6d%40%74%69%73%63%61%6c%69%2e%63%6f%2e%75%6b%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b')) bet i get loads of spam again now!!}:)
I have gained my knowledge with a bit of research and chats with YRV owner members DaveDixon and Graham YRV130 etc... and member Aerodown used to add plenty of info on here, where are you matey??
The mods i have are clear side repeaters, chrome hand brake button :D, 195 x 15 Yoko tyres, Japaneazi drilled front discs, EBC greenstuff pads, Double din size radio cd player, lowering springs (to fit soon), Alloy oil cap, Alloy magnetic sump plug, Apexi rad cap and induction filter. Things are so hard to find but they are out there, somewhere!!!
I am sceptical about MPG, i seem to be filling up more than i would like. Trouble is i dont go far enough each day to judge it, only a short hop to work its barely off auto choke before i'm there. I'd guess at the low 30's MPG. Super unleaded is now at over £1 litre round here, robbing gits!!

Having a Scooby and a YRV at

Having a Scooby and a YRV at the moment I would def back the Scooby to win a sprint over any distance, especially as mine is a 6 speed and can be put in 2WD.
With regards economy, my YRV gets a minimum of 30 mpg and sometimes up to 35 mpg. It does seem smoother on V-power.
Now I am back with the standard air filter I can't notice any performance difference at all.
There is no comparison in performance as my Scooby has over double the BHP of my YRV.
The handling is also much better as you would expect.
I have 195 tyres on the YRV which improves it a bit.

Have you seen the You Tube video? STI vs YRV?

Hi Dave,

I wouldn't argue with the sprint against a scoob and a YRV turbo. Just saying for you to stand a chance you would need to rev the scoob at around 5000RPM before dumping the clutch to get the take off you need, but at the expense of knackering your clutch Wink . Not cheap on a scooby Sad . Have you seen the you tube video? Worth a look Smile . Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5QRxKT36Oo

Jonny,

Your right, theres not much info on these cars as you get with the scooby. Most of the stuff I've found out has been from this forum. I think the issue is that the YRV turbo is a bit of a dark horse, and they were only manufactured on a limited run. And you have to agree you don't see many around. I personally have only seen 2 in the flesh. 1 x black and 1 x silver. Probably why info is short on these.
On the subject of Daihatsu Dave. Just need to be patient. He frequents the forums, just give him time, he'll answer.

YRV Turbo MPG

I drive my wee turbo around 200 miles a week and the most i have pushed out of a full tank is 260 miles and that was going like a slow 60mph most of the time and going easy on the pedal. I have searched loads on the web , there are a few very good jap sites problem being you can't understand anything. There are a few body kits out there but doubt if they will ever be seen outside japan. I'nm still toying with the idea of sticking a manual box in. Can't see any major problems with it. Just need time to do it. I have fixed my problem with the Blitz exhaust and took of the engine mount support and made a custom one and also extended the middle mount so it doesnt rub on the bottom of the car. Now i got a rattle free turbo yeay

Turbo Boost

Can't argue with a gauge, as I don't have one fitted!

1 bar is the max boost in my other car a Smart Roadster, (which does have a boost gauge) so I guess that the YRV Turbo is not too stressed at a similar level of boost pressure.

But the turbo boosting from 1000rpm upwards, hmm I'm not sure it'll join in till nearer 3000rpm or around the max torque figure.

However, as I said at the beginning, I don't have a gauge!
