Sportrak 3 gear woes

Forum:

Hi Everyone

I own and love my 1995 Sporty ELXi. However I find it realy annoying that you cant realy get it into 3rd gear with any sort of refinment bolow 2000 rpm. Its not a real problem I was just wondering if it was common. If you try to accelerate hard in 3rd under 2000 rpm the transmission sounds like its gonna fall out. Is this just a foible of the overall gearing of the thing or a gearbox prob?

Sportrack luggage space??

Forum:

Hi,

I'm pondering on either getting a Sportrack within the next year or so (when my insurance goes that little lower). But one of the only things that is making me doubt over the purchase is whether there is enough luggage space for when I pick up my 2 kids (usually once a month for a weekend and the odd week) & all their gear. Or would I be better off going for a fourtrack?

Any & all advice gratefully recieved.

Forum:

Well, at the w/end, after much putting-off and "shall-I or-shant-I?" thinking, I did it. It's done!

First point is that the manual is not quite DIY friendly, and assumes you are doing it in a workshop up on a ramp. You will need assistance, obviously in some aspects. To get any sort of access to remove the box you'll need ramps, and possibly (as I did) slacking off of the engine mounts to facilitate some kind of engine movement, essential when re-installing the 'box.
I also found it essential to remove the entire exhaust system, also you'll need space behind the box, so get rid of the whole rear propshaft. The only bugbear I found during the strip was the removal of the gearsticks (Might have been me, that.) and I had to grind off an exhaust bolt. The transfer unit was fairly light, I thought.

water problem

Forum:

firstly i would just like to say hello to every one and ask the following: i have just purchased a 1990 sportrak from local auction, paid a not bad price for her as condition of body and interior realy good, however after driving her home from auction i discovered a lot of water running under car, after opening bonnet to investigate i discovered some one had put radwell or something similar in radiator to hide a leak coming from below dizzie cap, checked core plug but looks ok, got mate to check as he some sort of mechanic and he said it looks like a small pipe /hose below the dizzie could be burst so i have ordered one from local dealer. loss of water is only there when i turn engine off but it does settle and is only about a small cup loss.however my wife and i went a run this evening just to show the wife how it was runing (no jokes please) and i noticed temprature was quite high and and also fan did not come on but she does drive realy well and yes i have had her top of and it was great (car that is)any suggestions why high temp but not over heating and why fan not coming on, everything is working perfect except the above (fault that is

Head Gasket Issues new

Forum:

I confirmed that there was bubble inthe expansion bottle. I have now removed the head. It appears that some has been there before me with the removal.

Upon inspecting the gasket it had blown between N°:2/3 chamber. but I could not see not coolant tracks anywhere. This blow would explain the slight stumble I was feeling but I can not explain the coolant loss. As said, it looks to me like the head has been off (paint pen crosses on all bolts) but the gasket looks frail tatty.

I'm going to check head is not worped tonight but it looks fine. (FYI, I can still see the daihatsu symbol on the valves!!)
