Fourtrak (91 H) Front Axle Leak

Forum:

I have an oil leak on my nearside front axle, coming from the swivel ball. I have been trying to get hold of a workshop manual for stripping the axle, does anyone have an e-mailable document? or fax? I assume that there is a half-shaft seal that is leaking oil into the hub but I'm not that familar with the system. Can anyone help, I brought the beast about three months ago, its a 1991 H 2.8TD Estate.

Cheers

Fan

Forum:

Minding my own business in the supermarket car park 2day, I noticed an L reg Sporty parking up not too far away. The driver got out, and looked at mine and started to walk over and asked me what I thought of them. Had a bit of a chat, and then said he has a "continual roar" and do I have the same? I hadn't, but agreed to have a listen to see what I thought.
It was obvoius as soon as he fired up that the cooling fan was stuck on, and the viscous coupling mechanism had failed, so it was turning all the time - even when the lid was lifted and I tried to turn it manually, it was stuck fast. I was just wondering if someone here has had this go, and is it common?

Tow bars

Sportrak Electrics

Forum:

Just been poking around in my Sportrak to find out about the rear speakers, and discovered that behind the nearside rear interior panel (behind the rear interior light) there are a couple of wires that have connectors on the end but aren't joined to anything (on the same loom as the interior light)... any one know what they're for?? (I've only got a EXi so its probably to do with top-spec versions)

Also, does anyone know hows best to remove the blanking off panels that cover where the rear road lights went on earlier models (either side of the tailgate)... my are bolted at the top but practically imposible to get to! Are the lights that go there still available or is it a matter of finding a scrap yard with them?!

Locking hubs

Forum:

Greetings fellow Sportrak drivers. I have a question the answer to which most of you will think is obvious but bear with me because I've not had my Sportrak very long and I don't know much about cars. In the Tips section, one of the tips is to lock the wheel hubs before your journey if you think you may need to change to 4 wheel drive at some stage. Why can you not just leave the hubs permanently locked and change to 4 wheel drive as and when you need to without needing to get out of the car every time? I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason for this - I'd just like to know what it is.
