(Click and Clack the Tappet brothers are humorous radio talk show car problem solvers on National Public Radio in the U.S.)

Dear Click and Clack,

I just bought a used, year 2000 Daihatsu Hijet minibus from a Japanese import lot here in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It measures 5 feet wide by 11 feet long and is 6’3” tall and is a 5 speed with a 660cc, 3-cylinder motor and uses lots of regular gas, which costs $3.50 a gallon here. In 5th gear at 60mph it runs at a little over 4 grand but it is adorable.

Yaris engine to Extol gearbox?

Forum:

I am planning to build a rear wheel drive kit car and would like to use a Toyota Yaris engine (which is the same engine as in a Daihatsu Extol, except it stands up rather than lies down). Does anyone know if the Yaris engine will bolt onto the Extol gearbox? Can anyone advise what are the gearbox and final drive ratios on the Extol?

I want one and need to know

Forum:

I am in the Dominican Republic after cruising on a 30' Pearson Sloop for 6 years from the U.S.A. There are no new Hijets or Deltas here( all used imports from Japan) and I want to buy a used (2003) one to haul stuff around, play and go camping. In Constanza, a town of 80k at 3000 feet in the mountains. The locals load the little hijets with enormous amounts of stuff. Some times it is hard to see the little vehicles. Questions. On the truck it say 4WD, what does it stand for. It is not 4 wheel drive. There is no axle in the front. I have seen several sizes of Deltas, the larger one seems to have three separate single seats and the smaller one seems to have a single driver seat and a seat and a half for the passenger. I will probaly end up with the hijet because of the cost. Can I increase the tire width in the rear for a little better traction or will that over power the rear-end and transmission? What speed can I average on the big (very few) smooth roads and not damage it? I will never be loading the Hijet with 20 people or three times its weight in produce. I just need to carry a fishing rod and a couple of friends. I want the Hijet that all 3 bed sides open. Do they come routinely with diesels or mainly gas engines. All thoughts appreciated.

fuel consumption hijet 1994 carb 3cyl

Forum:

hello people a few questions regarding my ( new to me ) 2nd hand 1994 `L` hijet carb 3 cylinder:
what is the fuel consumption town/surburban/constant 56mph.

ignition timing for unleaded fuel for optimum performance and fuel economy.

there is a sensor on the back of the cylinder head below the distrubutor drive with a single spade connector, what is this used for, it seems to be some emmisions control thingy coz the radiator fan and the temp guage works when i take the plug out.

Resently my family and i took our diahatsu hijet for a overnight stay with friends. (200miles there and back)
About an hour and a half in the the trip the poor car was getting really hot, worried it my die on the motorway we continued our trip Sad just miles from my friends the engine cut out and came back again Scratch one-s head we were very worried but got to our desination. After a few hours to cool we checked the water level and replace nearly 2litres.

My first Daihatsu!

Forum:

I just wanted to tell you all that I have just aquired my first Daihatsu. It's a little blue Hijet called Esio Trot. Not only is Esio my first Daihatsu but they're my first car too! I'm currently in the process of turning them into a camper... a very, very small camper! Just wanted to share that with you all. Smile
